Thoughts for Thursday | Sleeping Babies

Hey Friends, Welcome to Thoughts for Thursday.

I have two quick things for all of you today. Both about the kids.

First, I wanted to give a quick update on Madelyn.

About a month ago, Madelyn started climbing out of her crib.  She was only eighteen months and started diving head first out of her crib.  It was dangerous and scary.  I was definitely not prepared.  I freaked out a bit because Matt and I were heading out of town for the weekend just days after she started climbing out.  It made things complicated and tough.

I immediately took to Amazon and tried to decide what our best solutions would be.  I decided to order a crib canopy, toddler bed rail for her crib, and we moved a twin bed in her room to the floor.  I was desperate to make something work.

The crib canopy didn’t arrive in time, we tried a couple nights on the floor mattress; but ultimately went with the toddler bed rail.  She liked being back in her crib, but she had the freedom to crawl out if needed.

While in the moment, this whole transition seemed awful and like it would never end.  I remembered this transition being pretty easy with Brody because he was older and I was just not ready for this.  We spent the first 3-4 days trying out different scenarios until we finally figured out one that would work.  My pediatrician recommended that we stuck with the same bedtime routine each night.  Sit in chair, read the same two books, sing and then lay her in her bed.   This whole routine took a lot longer than it ever did when she was in the crib.  She used to go to bed so easily.  But it ended up working.  She got the hang of it after about a week or so.  After two weeks, she had it down pat.  She seemed to test me the most and actually did better at first when my husband or MIL put her to sleep (when we were out of town).  But the moral of it all is that once again, it’s all just a phase.  It seems like it will never end while you’re in it, but this too shall pass 🙂

Second, I need some advice from all of you on Brody.

Brody has been potty trained since about a month after he turned 3.  He will be 4 at the end of June.  He’s had very few accidents ever once he finally got potty trained, but we always put a diaper or pull up on him for naps and nighttime. About 2 or 3 months ago, we stopped putting pull ups on him for nap time and he’s never once had an accident.  I’ve been amazed.   Does this mean he’s ready for no diaper at nap time?  I’ve been talking to him a lot about him and trying to convince him that he doesn’t need a diaper at night, but he always wants one.  He always wakes up with a wet diaper in the morning.  Do you think I just need to make him sleep in underwear and see what he does?  I think he’s just being lazy when he pees in his pull-up.  I don’t look forward to changing a bunch of wet sheets though ?

Tell me your experience, please!!

  1. Glad y’all figured out what works for Madelyn! But boo for no more crib! As far as Brody.. we stopped putting a pull up on when jack would consistently wake up dry. I had actually run out of them unknowingly and patrick who puts him to bed just started keeping him in underpants. He has yet to have an accident! I think if Brody is waking up dry then he’s ready!

Thanks Emily! I think you’re right. I feel like he should be ready, but he may need a little more time since his pull ups are still wet!

I would wait till you see a few dry pull ups in the morning, or till the fall at least before you try. Nighttime sleep is very different than a nap. Just my opinion.

  3. C was about that age when we stopped wearing pullups to sleep. He would wake up dry and I felt like they were just a waste at that point. When we stopped we talked about it a lot. Like in the car at breakfast whenever it was appropriate, so that he knew that pee peeing in the bed was not something we did and that if he had to go he had to get up and go on his own. We said goodbye to the pullups and he has never had an accident. I did put a plastic bag with a bunch of beach towels under him for the first week just to be safe.

Good luck! Moving to the next phase in anything has it challenges, but yay you’re there!

Oh man just stick with the pull up until he consistently wakes up dry. My oldest daughter potty trained very early, 17 months I think, I tried to put her in panties at night around 2 and after about 2 nights of waking up to change sheets multiple times a night, I gave up on that! You can’t night train them, it will happen when their bodies are ready & able. We also don’t do drinks after dinner other than a quick sip at teeth brush time!

Yes, I agree about nighttime drinks. I need to control that a little better. That’s amazing that your daughter was potty trained at 17 months!! What a treat 🙂

  5. I don’t have kids but I worked in a daycare with the infants and toddlers. We actually used to advise against pull ups because kids are smart and they know it’s the same as wearing a diaper. When we began the potty training process (if a child was ready), we were very old school about it and went straight from diapers to underwear and found that most of the time the potty training process went much quicker and easier than using pull ups. We did advise against pull ups but if a parent wanted to use pull ups then we did but it was usually a more difficult potty training process. Each kid is different though and you have to do what works best for you and your family. I totally get not wanting to change wet sheets all the time though, that’s probably a real pain and stressful!

I agree with you! That’s what I’ve been worried about…him being lazy and just peeing in his pull up because its easy. I feel like he definitely knows the difference and he would probably hold it if he knew he was in underwear.

Funny – we are going through with our daughter (4 in July) where you are with Brody. We used the last pull up and she said “okay I’m done now!” I was unsure because she would wake up wet more often than not. Turns out, the first three nights she stayed dry. After two nights of accidents, we’ve started to wake her up in the middle of the night (first around 11/12 when we’d go to bed) then around 2, now at 3:30. We just coax her up, walk with her to the potty, let her go and put her back to sleep. She practically sleepwalks. We are on week two of no accidents. Hoping by Memorial Day she can go the whole night.

Oh and sticker charts! She gets a star sticker if she goes to the bathroom immediately before bed without putting up a fight and then a bigger (princess or butterfly) sticker when she wakes up completely dry. When the poster board is full, she gets a big treat. Not sure what yet though!

Ahhh that’s good stuff!! I don’t love the idea of having to wake up multiple times a night (ha), but I get that it would only be short term too!

Annie that sounds so scary with Madelyn! It’s so great you figured out a solution. I am wondering the same about pullups with Shep so let us know what you end up doing! Have a wonderful weekend girl!

From my experience with my son, he was not ready for underwear until the pull up was dry. My son took MUCH longer than at this potty/sleep thing than my daughter. She was 48 hours and done. Not so much with my boy!

Agee with others.. if he isn’t dry then he’s not physically ready .. it’s not likely being lazy. My son is 4.5 and still soaked in the morning with pull-ups . I think he wants to wear underwear but he’s such a deep sleeper his mind and body aren’t making the connection at night to go to the potty. This isn’t forever… just let himself get ready or you will be changing a lot of sheets like I did before I realized that.

Try the two sheet trick! Our son was potty trained before 3 but still had occasional accidents. make sure he pees before nap/bed time. No water beside the bed or with him. In his bed we have the waterproof sheet then his bed sheet another waterproof sheet and another bed sheet because with 2 more kids under 3 mama has NO time for changing the bed in the middle of the night. This way if he does have an accident, I just rip up 1 layer and he’s good to go!

So Miller was waking up dry pretty much all the time so I decided to ditch pull ups shortly after Xmas, well then he randomly had two accidents in the middle of the night 🙁 So I put him back in pull ups but we had a long talk about going in the potty not your pull up if you’re awake so now he wakes up in the middle of the night to go, not my favorite thing because he still calls for us but he’s definitely learning. He’s still in the pull up but I think we can transition back to underwear at night soon. I agree that it could be laziness. Any morning I leave him in the pull up too long, if we’re having a lazy morning, he will soak that thing because he’s too busy playing or watching a show. I know it’s laziness too because if I put him straight in underwear when he wakes up he doesn’t have accidents. It’s a tough one!! Glad to hear Madelyn is doing well, we just moved Matthew to a toddler bed and he’s doing so much better than I expected. I think he could of stayed in his crib longer if I let him but since he’s almost 2.5 we decided to just give it a try and it worked. I’m feeling so sad to not have any babies in cribs anymore 🙁
