Thoughts for Thursday | Dressing Your Baby Boy

Welcome to another Thoughts for Thursday link-up.  Today I’m talking all about dressing your baby (or toddler) boy.  I’ve done several post in the past that you can find here that shares some of Brody’s fashion over the last (almost) two years.  I want to share some of my thoughts today on dressing a little boy as well as debunking the stereotype that it’s not as much fun to dress a boy as it is a girl!! That really can not be further from the truth.
Since finding out last week that we are having a baby girl next, it’s made me reflect a lot on how much fun it’s been having a little boy.  Of course I am ecstatic to have a little girl, but my time so far with Brody has truly been incredible.  I’ve learned so much about him and the innate characteristics that little boys are born with and what truly makes men and woman so different.  We are wired differently from the get-go. But that’s a topic for an entire post of it’s own!
Anyway, here are my feelings on dressing a little boy…
+ I get lots of sweet comments from all of you about how cute Brody is dressed.  I truly appreciate each one.  It’s amazing the amount of joy it brings me to shop and dress my little man.
+ Brody is approaching two and his “baby” stage is starting to come to an end.  His days of wearing bubbles are pretty much over which makes me shed a tear or two and we are becoming a little more limited on our selection of “one pieces.”
+ When I see other little boys dressed in frilly/lace outfits, I usually wonder if the father of the son puts up a fight over those outfits or not??   You want to know why?  Because my husband has been known to give grief over a few of Brody’s outfits.  I really tried to have a balance of clothes that weren’t too over-the-top that I knew he would hate, but still get my way with some beautiful traditional day gowns and outfits.
+ Below were some of Brody’s newborn day gowns that Matt didn’t quite understand at first; but once he realized the practicality of them when we were changing 18 diapers a day, he came around a little

+ Kissy Kissy (and Paty) gowns were truly my favorites.  They are so darn soft and still super practical.  They can take you from day to night and they even convert from gown into romper with a few little snaps.
+  If you live in the South, any baby boutique will sell plenty of options for smocked clothes, bubbles and day gowns.  I found most of mine from stores in New Orleans, Fairhope, and here in Pensacola.
+ We had a couple hand-me-downs, but not many.  I have two brothers and my Mom saved all of our beautiful clothes from when we were babies.  Unfortunately, every single one of them were lost in hurricane Ivan back in 2004.  It makes me so sad to think about.  I would have loved to seen Brody in some of them and even more so seen our new baby girl in some of my childhood dresses.  But, they’re gone πŸ™

+ Matt called this type of outfit below, Pilgrim collars.  He was not a fan at all!! I love the big collars and probably would have had many more if he didn’t whine about them so much.

+ Bubbles are seriously my fave.  There is really nothing cuter than baby rolls hanging out in all their glory.  Rolls have never looked so good before….

+ These little Feltman Brothers Bobby Suits are a timeless, classic.  They will be saved as a family heirloom and treasured forever.  Matt can’t even fight me that Brody doesn’t look like a sharp dressed man πŸ™‚

+ Sorry for the excess of photos, but I had so much fun going through all my photos.  I definitely recognized the fact that I did a terrible job of pulling out my nice camera the first 3 months of Brody’s life.  That will definitely change for baby number two!! I vow to take great photos and not snap everything on my iPhone!!
+ Tell me, does anyone else’s husband fight you on the clothes that you dress your baby in??  Thank goodness I’m the one that dresses our baby every.single.day, so I’ll dress him in whatever the heck I want to πŸ™‚  Make sure you always win this battle ladies.  As I tell Matt, Brody has the rest of his life to wear khaki’s and button down shirts.  I’m going to dress him like a baby for the few short years he is a baby!!!

Now it’s your turn.  Share your thoughts with Natalie and I and link-up with us below!

I was always very insistent that Caleb be dressed like a baby while he is a baby. My husband let me pick the smocked outfits and bubbles until Caleb was around 18 months and then said "No more". Which wasn't helped by the fact that a nursery worker thought Caleb was a girl in a bubble he wore to church one Sunday at 15 months or so. So Polo and bow ties and suspenders (with some seersucker and appliques thrown in here and there) it's been since then! Sigh. The time goes so fast!

  3. Brody is such a well dressed little man, especially when his mama always looks so great! I love dressing boys, it is so much fun! You can dress them in bubbles and very traditional baby clothes and as they grow out of that stage there are so many fun options, especially with tee shirts and button downs. I still love buying clothes for Greyson and getting him dressed everyday, and they go with the flow much longer than girls do!

  5. I love all of Brody's outfits!! He ways looks so adorable!! I need to look for an all white romper of sorts for Jack's baptism! Eek!! Matt doesn't care for the baubles & stuff but has agreed for special occasions he's ok with them! Haha!

  7. I love his outfits! Brandon did put up a fight with me on a couple of things – especially Peter Pan collars. But he doesn't give me grief about smocked John-Johns, which are my absolute favorite…especially in Texas in the summer! I'm so sad those clothes were lost in the hurricane; what a bummer!!!

  8. I absolutely love how you dress Brody and if my little one ends up being a boy he'll be wearing very similar outfits. My mom dressed my brother and I in smocked dresses and jon jons so to me it's how little kids are supposed to dress. I would love to know what's the max you pay for his clothes. As I look at kids clothes I start I think about how short of a time they wear them so it's hard to rationalize spending a ton of money.

  9. we don't even know what we're having yet but I have been told that our son will not wear a dress….Lawd help my husband if we have a boy because bubble suits and John Johns are all that child will be in. I adore how Brody is dressed…he is just the perfect little southern gentlemen!

Thanks for hosting Annie another week. I think how you dress your little boy is adorable. It is only for a short time so enjoy it. I had three girls and now I have a grandson and I didn't really know how to dress him. My daughter loves dressing her little man and now that I know her style, I have so much fun looking for outfits for him. Having a little girl will put you over the top!

I always love how you dress him and never understood why people said it's more fun to dress girls than boys because they have precious stuff too! I completely agree with you that babies/kids are only young once so they should dress like they're little and not just little adults! Can't wait to see you dress your sweet girl!

I love his outfits! My husband and I are already having the clothes debacle and we don't even know what these babies are yet. If one or more is a boy.. he'll have to suck it up at least until he's 2. I think those outfits are just classic and adorable! Dressing your little girl will be a blast too! πŸ™‚

This must be a Southern thing. I'm with Matt..no way. This is not how little boys should dress. Thank God you are having a girl. But at least where you live other boys are dressed the same way. I feel sorry for him but he has a great Mom!

Your outfits are so adorable! It's so funny looking at all Brody's old pictures and see him grow up. Good to know it's just as fun dressing a boy πŸ˜‰ I could see my hubby saying something about boy's clothes but nothing about girls since he knows nothing about girls lol Enjoy all the smocked dresses and bubbles for your precious little girl!

I did notice that you had a very well dressed boy in the pictures you share here! We're a onsie family, for boys and girls. I love the easy diaper access, the soft fabric, and how easy they are to wash. I love the little suits you've found for your son but I think my husband would side with yours. For dressy occasions and church, our boys wear button-downs or polo shirts, just like their daddy.

First of all- baby Brody!!! I can't believe how big our boys are now! πŸ™ I totally agree with you that dressing little boys is just as much fun as girls and I hate when people say to me oh no you need a little girl so you can buy fun girl clothes. Ummm trust me I've done plenty of damage with little boy clothes. No more bubbles for Miller but Kyle doesn't care if I put him in jon jons, longalls or bobby suits and hasn't tried to fight me lately at all. I figure this summer will probably be my last for him since I have to be practical with potty training eventually πŸ™ Matthew on the other hand will be wearing bubbles all summer long! I am so excited to have another baby to put in bubbles. I've already bought him so many. I do think you can get away with little girls in bubbles a lot longer so that's exciting for you! Can't wait to see how you dress your little girl because I know it will be precious.

I just bought Harrison's last bubble πŸ™ I agree 100% that they have their whole lives to dress like mini men and only a short while to dress like a baby. I'm so sad y'alls clothes got lost in Hurricane Ivan! Luckily, Dan, doesn't say anything. Brody is just too sweet for words. Love a well dressed Southern baby πŸ˜‰
